Kitchen French
Kitchen French
This comes without saying when you learn pastry in France. Our chef tries to use lotta French word for the utensils and makes it easy to remember. At times, it is difficult for me. I think in my mother tongue, tell that in English to my classmates and then we use the French we learnt :P The best way to remember the Kitchen French is to tell that loud when doing dishes I guess. I do that everyday. And its so funny till you get that right. I love the Cul de Poulet – That is literally butt of the chicken in French :P And it means a bowl because generally a round bottomed bowl looks more or less like a chicken butt :P I can remember Cul de Poulet even after I leave France I guess :D When Chef writes Cul de Poulet on the board during the pastry class, I immediately respond with ‘Chicken butt!’ It is a famous word in France though. There are restaurants called ‘Cul de Poulet’ and a small cute shop in Yssingeaux called ‘Cul de Poulet’
There are no gender for things in my mother Tongue Tamil. However, French has gender for almost anything and everything. My French teacher says I don’t use articles properly before any word. The ‘Les moutons’ are just ‘moutons’ for me :P We made a chocolate showpiece in our class last week . They were Les moutons. Mine was a big fat Les Moutons :P Everyweek we wait for the montage session as it kinda brings the artist in you. There are no rules for your show piece as long as it looks good. That happens every Friday and it is so relaxing from the stress of the Kitchen.
The scary part of the Kitchen French is learning numbers I can’t stand those numbers. OMG! The French teacher often asks me to read numbers and its more or like a guessing game :P Once she conducted a game where my classmate Amie and I are supposed to round the numbers she tells us and we both were pushing and pulling each other to round the wrong numbers :D I can count till 10 and may be till 15. But numbers are very important while learning French as you use them not only in the Kitchen but in Supermarket, bus, train and what not
One of classmates, Sandra suggested to buy Kindergarten French books to earn numbers, alphabets and things easily. That is one of the smart ways I guess. You can also get these books in used books sale that happens once in a while in France.
